Plastic Free July... and every month?

Every year, millions of people from around the world join the Plastic Free July movement—a global initiative that encourages individuals to reduce their plastic consumption and environmental impact. This campaign provides a powerful opportunity to rethink our everyday habits and make meaningful changes that benefit the planet. If you’ve been looking for ways to start your plastic-free journey, we have been posting tips on our socials this month on how to reduce plastics in your daily lives. We wanted to do a little blog post for those of you who aren't as savvy on the socials!

Easy Tips to Reduce Plastic in Your Daily Life

1. Bring Your Own Reusable Bags

One of the simplest ways to cut down on plastic is by bringing your own reusable bags when shopping. Keep a few foldable bags in your car, purse, or backpack so you’re always prepared. Reusable bags are sturdier than plastic ones and can be used countless times, making them a great investment for both you and the environment. This one is almost mandatory here in Colorado now that they outlawed plastic bags but I'm still guilty of forgetting mine all the time!

2. Switch to a Reusable Water Bottle

Ditch single-use plastic bottles in favor of a durable, reusable water bottle. Stainless steel, glass, or one of our new awesome ceramic travel mugs are good options! Keeping a reusable bottle with you ensures you stay hydrated without contributing to plastic pollution. (My own father still can't get away from the plastic water bottles so...we all do our best haha!)

3. Use Reusable Containers and Wraps

Say goodbye to disposable plastic wrap and sandwich bags by opting for reusable containers and wraps. Beeswax wraps, silicone bags, and glass containers are perfect for storing food, packing lunches, and keeping leftovers fresh. Plus, they add a touch of eco-friendly charm to your kitchen!

4. Choose Plastic-Free Produce

When shopping for fruits and vegetables, choose unpackaged produce and bring your own reusable produce bags. Many stores now offer plastic-free options, allowing you to avoid the unnecessary plastic packaging often found in the produce aisle.

5. Invest in a Reusable Coffee Cup

Love your daily coffee fix? Take it to-go in a reusable coffee cup. Many cafes offer discounts for customers who bring their own cups, so you’ll save money while reducing waste. Look for cups made from stainless steel, glass, or ceramic like our awesome travel mugs!

6. Choose Bar Soap and Shampoo Bars or Refill Plastic Shampoo and Soap Bottles

Reduce plastic in your bathroom by switching to bar soap and solid shampoo or refill your current bottles of soaps at Refillary. Keep an eye out for local or artisanal brands, like the ones we carry in the shop, to support small businesses and reduce your carbon footprint.

7. Avoid Plastic Straws

Plastic straws are a common single-use item that can easily be replaced with reusable options. Carry a stainless steel, silicone, or glass straw with you and politely decline plastic straws when dining out. Many establishments are also transitioning to biodegradable straws, which are a great alternative. I don't personally care for those paper straws....so I try and keep one of our glass straws on me to use instead.

8. Buy in Bulk

Purchasing items in bulk can significantly cut down on plastic packaging. Bring your own jars, containers, or cloth bags to bulk food stores for grains, nuts, pasta, and more. Buying in bulk not only reduces plastic waste but also allows you to buy only what you need, minimizing food waste. Refillary is an Azure Standard drop site so you can easily buy food in bulk form from them!

9. Support Plastic-Free Brands

Be mindful of the brands and products you support. Look for companies that prioritize sustainable practices and offer plastic-free or minimal packaging. By choosing to spend your money on eco-friendly products, you encourage businesses to adopt healthier practices for the planet. Does your favorite brand still use plastic packaging? Send them an email or give them a call and demand (kindly!) for them to get with the sustainable program!

10. Educate and Inspire Others

Share your plastic-free journey with friends, family, and social media networks. By raising awareness and providing helpful tips, you can inspire others to join the movement and make a difference. The collective effort of individuals can lead to significant environmental benefits and lasting change.

Plastic Free July encourages us to rethink our consumption habits and make more sustainable choices. By implementing these easy tips in your daily life, you can reduce plastic waste, protect wildlife, and contribute to a healthier planet. Remember, every small change adds up—your actions matter!

That said, let's all try and make it more than just Plastic Free July... and make it Plastic Free...As much as possible :)
